Zero Waste Lush Hair Bars

Have you ever thought about how many shampoo and conditioner bottles you have lying around? I look around my bathroom and see nearly empty or completely full bottles just sitting there. So I started to think, what if there was a way to wash your hair without having to use products in a plastic bottle?

I was introduced to Lush from a friend who loved their bath bombs, made from all natural ingredients. I had ventured in to see what other products they have and their store associate showed me the shampoo and conditioner bars. It was the first time I had seen them in person and she explained that they are used just like a bar of soap but on your hair. Customers can also purchase an affordable metal container to store and keep dry when they are not being used.  I was so excited to try them.

The store associate told me she has been using her bars since November.  Imagine replacing your  plastic bottles with one bar for 8 months, thats amazing!

Would you believe me if I told you that the number of shampoo bottles purchased in the US and thrown out could fill 1,164 Football Fields (Earth911) Plastic haircare bottles can be recycled only when completely rinsed out but many people do not take the time to do this so they end up in the rubbish bin.

Thoughts After Trying Them

I have long, wavy, and thick hair so I was a little skeptical. The associate I spoke to also had textured hair and recommended a hair honey to help with frizz to use along with the bars.

I hopped in the shower, wet my hair, and lathered the Honey shampoo bar first in my hands. I felt like I was using my regular shampoo and I could clean root to end perfectly; not to mention it smells amazing. I  give it a 5/5 and I am totally hooked on the shampoo bar.

I was ready for the conditioner bar and did the same but it does not lather up quiet the same. Conditioners usually feel creamy and leave your hair feeling soft and smooth. I took the bar its self and rubbed it straight on my ends and that provided some product. I am using the Sugar Daddy-O bar which is like a purple shampoo that removes the brass tones for blondes. I spoke to the associate and she said I should run hot water over this soap for a little while. (She also gave me some other conditioner linked below)

I tried the conditioner bar again but ended up switching to the conditioner American Cream instead. Also an eco-friendly product because they can be purchased in recycled black pots and returned back to the store when rinsed out and empty. The bars are great but maybe for those with thinner hair.

I finish my shower get out and towel dry my hair. I wait about 15-20 minutes and rub the hair honey through it on the ends and smooth out the frizz.

I didn’t tell anyone I had switched hair products and a few friends said my hair looked more voluminous and healthy. I felt like I could wear my hair natural or style it with hot tools and still get the same results I would using my previous products.

Overall, I thought the bars were a great alternative to plastic bottles. Not to mention great for traveling and I’m thrilled to add these to my lifestyle to help eliminate my plastic use!
